I cant stop laughing at the ridiculous prices many programmers that probably even lack experience are calling, one said 500k, another said 800k and yet another posted thousands of dollars. truth is, there are apps that cost millions or thousands of dollars, but what our naija programmers get wrong is trying to charge base on what they see their usa counterpart charges. it just cant work that way cause economy differs, u cant say because Americans charge $10,000, you too wanna charge same in nigeria, Take for example, A banker in the usa will earn averagely about $9,000 monthly which is about 3.2million monthly while in Nigeria, 3.2million is some bankers yearly salary. Indians are another experts in software development, but they charge noting close to other develop countries because economy differs, many programmers in nigeria who ought to be living well doing many jobs end up not having much because they have clouded their mindset base on charging like abroad programmers. To the poster, rather than seeking online programmers (though a few on nairaland who have worked with are good) but going to a good IT company in Nigeria will cost alot less, u might spend less than 150k for the kind of app you wanna build . If they charge you anything above 200k, be sure to get exceptional great functions.

Kinda funny.
If i code alone, I should collect nothing less than 120k (120k is mah least expected pay).
But if i code with mah team, we collect nothing less than 300 to 400k(yeah right well plus added physical features i can't mention ImageImage....
Hahahaha u think coding is easy, go use a program generator and in less than 3months, i swear we would pull down your business with the same language used to code the program..

The average hourly rate of an american dev ranges from around $100 (very low) to $1000+ (top nerds). But this is small compared to other professionals. A top marketing consultant could b commanding $5k/hr! While this may seem high to us (and the rest of the world) , it's not much if you are living over there! A good dev salary is $100k. But a house is about $800-1m+! In major tech hubs. House rent for a 2 room place takes a lot in ppls income. 2) while a chinese worker can earn $27/month (big enough to cause rice farmers to migrate to the city) . Most indian nd chinese programmers flooding freelance sites,output code of horrendously poor quality.They are some u.s firms who dont outsource because of this. When you consider the nigerian charge nd actual developmnt cost,u see,we dont charge much. Lets do d math:

24 internet- [s]\[/s]~20k (spectranet)
adequate electricity-15-30k(nepa+gen+servicing)
rent - 30 - 50k (2 room self contained)
hardware subsidy-10k
(hardware failure etc)

i've not included health insurance,food,transportation,TAXes, before we get to the main profit!
I know we dont think like these but top companies do,that's why they charge very high for their servces. They cover ALL COSTS and pass on ALL OF it to the end user.
So,while it may seem high, a developer charging what they charge shouldnt be. It's actually trivial,in d scheme of things! Top talent r also scarce,inspite of droves of indians chinese etc. Ever wonder y google/microsoft pay their engineers so well? Up $200k+ (and easily reaching $500k+) ? Because by their math, the value provided exceeds the cost they r paying for. And the math is working well for them so far. Most nigerians r grossly underpaid nd overworked,we've gotten used to it so when we see some1 charge what he's worth, there's outrage!

@"asalimpo"#p876 but guy u talk better thing for here, i was once opportuned to work alongside some austria programmers(my work was not programming thou, more like the guy doing the audit), and i must say, this guys just do things upside down and was expecting the upside up result, in quote this guys were aweful, well its not that i could do what they where doing(am just a learner), but to be honest the way they handled the project was just too mediocre for a over-rated IT professionals, if not for a lady programmer(that girl is too awesome), i guess that project would have been another abandoned project.!!!
Anyway Nigerian programmers are so bounded with building projects for people business and can't even think of an idea that could regurlarly give them the dough they want.
Look at Mark(facebook c.e.o)...he was a freelancer before not until he built facebook, i guess Nigerians can't think of same....
Is alryt though, the possibility of FreeLancers going into extinction is just near minimal.!!!!

@"OTRebirth"#p834 80k for apps? Are you alright? I charge a minimum of 100k for ordinary web design(with no coding) talk more of apps. And I still think that is small compared to what my colleagues charge. @emmatdayo the average budget should be 180k and above for a basic android app and 250+ for a basic ios app . App is not beans, it's not a website that you can build and leave for 1 year and still meet it there, functionalities change, apis change, OS configurations change and you have to be ready to pay management fee per month so your developer can monitor and update the app where needed. Any developer that charges you 80k will run away with your money and build crap for you.

Let me be honest with you, app development (including software and web development generally) takes time and patience. If you want a developer to do a good job for you, pay good money. Don't look for cheap developers, they will do your work once and run away from you when problem comes, infact there are developers that'll offer to do it for 40k self if you want something cheaper. But remember the lesser the cost , the lesser the commitment and seriousness attached to work.
Lastly, Cheap things are not good and good things are not cheap.

Seriously dude developing a mobile app is not some joke, you should already have a budget of 50k and above and be sure to hire a competent developer, maintainance is also something to be at the back of your mind, although this might free for some developers others might charge, I can do it for you just checkout
